OnahotsummerafternooninNewYork,EmmaJonesgossipswithotherneighborsinherresidentialbuildingabouttheaffairthatMrs.AnnaMaurrantandthemilkmanSteveSankeyarehaving.WhentherudeandunfriendlyMr.FrankMaurrantarrives,theychangethesubject.Meanwhile,theirteenagedaughterRoseMaurrantisbeingsexuallypressuredbyhermarriedbossMr.BertEaster.ShedoeshoweververymuchlikeherkindyoungJewishneighborSam,whohasaseriouscrushonher. Thenextmorning,FrankMaurranttellshiswifethatheistravelingtoStamfordonbusiness.Mrs.MaurrantmeetsthegentleSankeyinherapartment,butoutoftheblueFrankcomesbackhome.HerealizeshiswifeisupstairswithSankey,andrunsupstairs.WehearshotsandseethetwomenstrugglingasSankeytriestoescapethroughthewindow.Maurrantrunsoutwithagun.HehaskilledSankeyandfatallywoundedhiswife.
